Hyperpigmentation

Did you know that worldwide 90% of people over 50 will suffer from some form of hyperpigmentation? It is therefore not surprising that skin pigmentation is one of the leading concerns among clients. Pigmentation occurs due to the production of melanin by melanocyte cells and is the pigment responsible for your skin’s colour. The technical term for too much pigment is

Hyperpigmentation

What causes hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by various factors, including age, genetics, medications, and sun exposure. The following are common causes of uneven pigmentation and dark sun spots:

  • Age: As we age, the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, can become uneven, resulting in areas of hyperpigmentation.
  • Genetics: Certain genetic factors can make individuals more prone to developing hyperpigmentation.
  • Medications: Some medications can cause hyperpigmentation as a side effect. For example, certain antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, and hormone treatments may contribute to pigmentation changes.
  • Sun exposure: Chronic exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays is a significant contributor to hyperpigmentation. It can lead to the development of sunspots or age spots, particularly on sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.

Types of hyperpigmentation:

  1. Melasma: Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder characterized by dark brown patches of skin pigment primarily found on the face. It is often associated with hormonal changes during pregnancy (mask of pregnancy), the use of hormonal medications (contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy), and chronic sun exposure.
  2. Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: This type of hyperpigmentation occurs as a result of inflammation or trauma to the skin. It can be triggered by acne breakouts or poorly performed skin treatments such as lasers or radiofrequency. The skin responds by overproducing pigment in the affected areas.
  3. Sun damage: Excessive sun exposure damages the pigment-producing cells in the skin, leading to the development of sunspots or age spots. These typically appear later in life, starting around the age of 40, and are commonly found on sun-exposed areas.

Best treatments for hyperpigmentation:

There are several effective treatments available to address hyperpigmentation. The choice of treatment depends on the specific type and severity of the pigmentation. Here are some popular treatment options:

  • Lumecca: Lumecca is an intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment that targets pigmented lesions, including sunspots and age spots, using broad-spectrum light. It helps to break up the excess pigment, leading to a more even skin tone.
  • Fractional resurfacing: Fractional resurfacing treatments, such as fractional lasers or radiofrequency devices like Morpheus8, can improve hyperpigmentation by promoting collagen production and skin rejuvenation.
  • IPL photofacial: IPL photofacial treatments use intense pulsed light to target pigmented areas and stimulate collagen production for overall skin rejuvenation.
  • Intensive pigment peel: Chemical peels with specific pigment-targeting ingredients can help lighten and reduce hyperpigmentation.
  • ZO facials: ZO facial treatments, designed by Dr. Zein Obagi, can address various skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation, using a customized approach.
  • BelaMD epidermal infusion: BelaMD epidermal infusion treatments utilize advanced serums and exfoliation to improve skin tone and reduce hyperpigmentation.
  • Micro-needling: Micro-needling treatments create controlled micro-injuries to the skin, triggering the body's natural healing response and promoting collagen production to improve hyperpigmentation.
  • Home care: Consistent use of effective skincare products, such as topical creams or serums containing ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, vitamin C, and kojic acid, can help fade hyperpigmentation over time.

It's important to consult with a skincare professional or dermatologist to determine the most suitable treatment option based on your specific skin type, condition, and concerns. They can assess your skin and recommend a personalized treatment plan to effectively address hyperpigmentation and achieve a more even complexion.
